Shakespeare associates madness with the act of revenge. The play reads: “Laer [to Ophelia]: Hadst thou they wits, and didst persuade revenge, It could not move thus” (Hoy, 76). Laertes says that if one is sane, then one cannot be persuaded toward revenge. No one in the play accuses Laertes of insanity. However, he converses with the king to murder Hamlet. Hamlet, who appears insane to most of the cast, also contemplates suicide, but he considers himself sane. Must one be sane to commit revenge? I feel that the players Laertes and Hamlet are mad. This is so because they contemplate revenge. This may be the sort of mockery that Shakespeare achieved in his “Revenge Tragedy” – proving the lunacy of revenge.
