As Hamlet readies for the play, he comments on the possibility that the ghost is not real. The play reads: “Hamlet: It is a damned ghost that we have seen, and my imaginations are as foul” (Hoy, 50). This suggests the following: a. The ghost is “damned,” perhaps the devil as we talked about in class; b. The ghost is real but it lies and Hamlets thoughts are ill; or c. Hamlet created the ghost out of his “foul” mind. The ghost is not a good omen. It is a harbinger of death. Marcellus sums the thing us, saying: “Something is rotten in the state of Demark” (Hoy, 20).
