At line 51, Claudius begins to be more honest with himself, I think, as he comes to a “who am I kidding” sentiment where he realizes that no amount of even the most undeserved grace can sanctify his crime because he is “still possessed of those effects for which [he] did the murder.” He wonders, “May one be pardoned and retain th’ offence?” In all of this, we see that his unwillingness to confess truly and go through the pain of consequence is withholding a heavenly ability to intervene and provide redemption
