Subject: Question to Think About: Claudius’ Confession (Part III)

Claudius finally ends up realizing that this state is wretched and that he truly is, as mentioned earlier in the passage, “to double business bound.” He is tormented by this, and feels trapped because, though he see an ability to possibly escape conviction in the material, physical world, the after-life and spiritual realm, he fears, will not withhold judgment from him. Ultimately, his confession and attempt at redemption really does not occur, as he rejects the need to “do penance” and experience the painful, sacrificial part of repentance, only coming to realize his guilt and confess his sins but not facing any consequences for his action.
