Claudius finally ends up realizing that this state is wretched and that he truly is, as mentioned earlier in the passage, �to double business bound.� He is tormented by this, and feels trapped because, though he see an ability to possibly escape conviction in the material, physical world, the after-life and spiritual realm, he fears, will not withhold judgment from him. Ultimately, his confession and attempt at redemption really does not occur, as he rejects the need to �do penance� and experience the painful, sacrificial part of repentance, only coming to realize his guilt and confess his sins but not facing any consequences for his action.
