I am afraid I disagree that Gregor is a crippled human. In fact, he is a much less crippled person than I or anyone I know. I think that perhaps it says something about our age that we look at Gregor fail to see the beauty in his life of service. He loves his family so much, and I sort of tear up when I read the lines about him listening to the violin. Do they love him? No, but, Christ loved us, even when we fail to love him adaquitly, even when we nailed him on a cross. And are we not called to imitate Christ in everything? Gregor makes himself a servent out of his own free will. Is he a cog in the machine? Yes! But he chose to be in this situation, even as he chose to die so that his family could move on wih their lives.
