Good point. To further your idea, I find it interesting that he conveniently didn't read the paper the next few days. This shows that he just will not acknowledge what he is doing wrong in his life. If he ignores it, its almost as if something didn't happen. He didn't turn to even look at the woman, and he didn't even read the paper to see what actually happened. You would think that someone would at least want to know if it was a suicide or an accident--not that either route would make it any better, the fact remains... he didn't help and won't acknowledge his lack of trying or that the event happened.
