I agree, I don't think he really repented there, but as we can see throughout the rest of the book, this event really bothers him and in the end he writes, "o young woman, throw yourself into the water again so that I may a second time have the chance of saving both of us!" Obviously it would be a hypothetical situation, but if this same event was to occur again, I believe he would have acted differently than he did the first time. He wants to "save" himself, by doing the right thing the second time around. I'm not sure that he repents for not turning around, but he knows that he should have.
