"Why do we, of our own free wills, lock ourselves into loving?"

Maybe we don't do it of our own free-wills. I think we just do it. Think about it: love and responsibility are the same thing, as we've been using the words; the existentialists say that we don't have a choice, we just have those responsibilities. We just have that love.

The Romans had an idea of pietas, which among other things was the idea that an individual was born into a web of obligations to his parents, children, and the community at large.

I think that is probably a good way to look at things. To the extent that we have a choice not to love, it's because we can choose to turn away from our responsibilities and love ourselves or hate another.

We can choose anti-love of our own "free", deliberative wills; actual love, though, may be the most natural thing in the world.
