bit of a late comment on this, oweing to internet shortages and general laziness, but thought i'd post my comments on the UEA gig, feel free to ignore as you see fit.
first, the bad
as seems to happen often with high vinyl concerts, through no fault of your own you were let down by poorly checked sound levels (in particular Kelso's electric guitar) which reduced the impact of songs like twenty pence and gravity and left them a little flat. obviously this is to be expected when you're given about 15 seconds each to soundcheck but for some reason, despite you definetly being the most melodically able and interesting band there, the other groups all sounded far more tight, i'm not really sure if this is something you guys can do something about or whether it's just symptomatic of playing first. i also thought the band suffered again from a poor stage presence, to me it seemed like the band really weren't enjoying themselves on stage, the 3rd band, i don't remember their name, despite being pretty average musically make a strong impression because they seemed to be having lots of fun and the movement on stage kept their averageness from getting stale. all pretty superficial i know, and i'm not really suggesting Auff headbanging and jumping around while Kelso plays with his teeth, but you can see why the review that auffret mentioned said you were inexperienced, when it seems like the band aren't getting into the music, it's much more difficult for the audience to.
sigh, lots of criticism there, i'm sorry, maybe i'm subconciously reacting to Lewis's unbridled and commendable enthusiasm, but there were lots of positive points too; Moth Eaten was a real stomper and the heavily textured and layered sound made it far and away the highlight of the set. i personally thought it should have gone first. Praise to Ally for his bongo playing in The Downpour (I think? I get confused between that and KBASM), it might seem pretty trivial but the fact that everyone from the Band Agency to Lewis has mentioned it is because it really does turn heads, for a primarily acoustic guitar driven band the impact it makes is really welcome and I personally would like more experimentation with these contrasts, because they really help in holding the audiences attention when you're a new band.
All in all, a good but not amazing performance and considering all the unavoidable things that went wrong, pretty stunning that it sounded as good as it did. I'm not joking when I say that I actually got quite choked up and tearful during the first couple of songs (Gravity in particular, though this might in part be for other reasons), but as I said after the gig, I still get pretty emotional watching my friends overcome all these obstacles that keep getting thrown in your way. I've gone on for long enough now, hope you get another gig before Kelso's goes off adventuring, if not, see you in the summer.
Lee
