] Date Posted: Tue, Dec 30 2003, 21:22:57 Hi, I was coerced into buying a membership from Universal Privilege yesterday 29 Dec 2003. They start late around 7pm altho it was said to start at 6.30pm. When it finally started they kept telling me how good their services are and the figures they presentation was very tempting and attractive. So when they told me to sign up on the spot, I asked them what's the difference in signing it 'today' or 'tomorrow'. The answer was that 'today' it's special rate of $10k+ instead of the 'tomorrow' rate of $20k+. When i said i cannot afford the $10k, they said they are willing to accept a payment of $5k (50%) deposit and the balance paid in monthly installments. I told them i dun have $5k upfront and they told me that they have in the past accepted 30% of the full amount ($3.5k) as a case to case basis. I told them my card cannot take that amount either and i apologise and told them i'm not interested in it. They asked for my credit card and NRIC. I told them that they can check with visa for the credit balance that i'm allowed to withdraw cos i was certain that it would be less than $3.5k. later they came back and told me that my credit card can only accept a $2k payment and they have already swiped my card for the $2k!!! they are willing to accept a $2k deposit and the balance paid out in monthly installments. And it was all 4+ hours before i finally paid. When i got home and was reading all the clauses more closely, i found out that there were alot of clauses which Customer Service Officer did not care to explain in detail but merely 'ran thru' them very quickly. I was not happy that there were certain things not mentioned during the presentation. I only found that out today (30 Dec 2003) when i approached the CSO. I told him i wanted to cancel the contract and he gave me 2 options. 1. go to CASE and get a directive from CASE to UP to cancel the contract within 5 days (he insisted that the 5 days included sat, suns and public holidays) but the $2k deposit is non-refundable. 2. get a lawyer and take legal action but he assured me that they have won most cases anyways...he had the cheek to tell me that he encourages me to go take legal action cos i would most probably lose!!! I will b going to CASE to find out if the 1st option works. After that is there anything that can be done? KMS [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
