] Date Posted: Sat, Feb 21 2004, 2:27:20 This email is written in response to an email sent to me from a friend, entitled: FW: Teenagers doing surveys in Orchard/Town area (BEWARE!!) i have had such experiences before..ppl calling me up telling me tat i won a trip to somewhere from some lucky draws tat i 'had taken part in'. Note tat some of these are cons..i have ever been in such a company before to work as a telemarketer for less than 2 hours and thats tat.i quitted and left on e spot because i cant bring myself to do this kinda job.n yes, i would warn all of u out there, beware of such fako telemarketers... BUT my advice to all of you is, please find out how true or how fake the call is, before u start rejecting the watevers- because it is NOT fair to draw conclusions and be totally un-receptive to whoever approached u out in the streets..i am a full time interviewer and i saw tis trend that singaporeans are getting narrower and narrower minded, bcoz of all these, even to e extend of running away fr strangers! i ever had an experience whereby i approached an auntie who exclaimed thAT she 'dun wan' and runs off with her 2 kids when all i wanted is to ask for directions. do i look like i came from mars or do i spell cannibal across my face? its amusing how ppl can tell u they 'dun wan' even before they know wat you are there for..wat if i called her only to tell her tat she dropped her wallet? its a shame how more n more humans are morphing into mice each passing day, hiding from all e strangers in the world thinking that the whole world consists of con-men n criminals n everyone's out to get their $$. and because of this, unreceptive ppl who restrict themselves and play hide n seek n reject n pretend to b deaf n blind to strangers will ONLY stand to LOSE. i hope u are not one of them. Back to the telemarketing issue whereby ppl call u up n lied tat u won so-n-so and tell u to go down n then u'l b undergoing super hard-sell tactics.. My advice to you is, judge the credibility of the caller before u go down to the office to collect ur 'prize'. This way, u can protect urself fr disappointment and un-neccessary trouble.. Thro my experience, (i get calls from such ppl VERY often.god knows how they get my num..) It is actually very easy to judge whther its jus another trick to get u down to their office. All it takes is a lil bit common sense. 1.) Such fakos usually call u up n ask u how much u earn per mth AFTER they tell u tat u won the prize. Let me ask u a Qs. If u really won a draw, they dun need to know ur income or anything. in fact, if any of u recalled, a baby boy in spore ever won a car in a grand draw. 2.) If u tell them u r not working, they will tell u tat they cant give u the prize unless u bring along a working adult who earns more than a certain amt of $. In true blue lucky draws, if u won something, u'l get it. no strings attached. no rules no questions asked no minimum age/income no nothing. all u have to do is to collect ur prize by tis date n bring ur IC along. Hiding, hanging up phones, telling e whoever on e phone tat u r not interested n being overly suspicious over every thing does NOT n will NOT help u at all. For those of u who know me, Channel U ever called me telling me to participate in their game show. in fact,i was told by e gal tat ppl refused to believe them when they called and they lost e chance to participate in the show- thanks to themselves.. One very important thing..pls note that not every telemakreter who call u up is to knock e money out of u..as i said previously, i m working in a research company.. our company has a team of ppl calling ppl up looking for respondetns. similar to e watever con companies, research companies have to ask u for ur income and other demographics but THESE ARE FOR ANALYSIS PURPOSES ONLY. ur demographics are important to us.without ur demographics, we r unable to conduct any surveys bcoz e info we gather will b useless to us. i guess the most important thing is for u to check the caller's company name in e yellow pages or ask for identity tags if u r approached by some1 who come knocking on ur door. if e person who approached u is jus there to do survey, u got nothing to lose. In fact, e below are wat u can get from participating in surveys: - focus group discussions - respondents can get between minimum $40-$200 dependign on survey topic n length. - surveys by appmt- respondents usually get $20 n above for a 15-45 min survey - try out new products/ drinks/ etc in the mArket.. u'll get free trial of product..may or may not recieve any cash tokens but if u are told to go to e reserach company, u'll either b given vouchers or cash. - door to door surveys- respondents may or may not receive anything, and, depending on e type of survey, respondents may b given either free gifts/vouchers/cash between $10-$60. - street surveys- respondents may or may not receive anything bcoz its illegal to distribute gifts/cash for some surveys (eg, cigarette surveys) depending on e type of survey, respondents may b given either free gifts/vouchers/cash. - govt surveys- u will not get anything, but will be FINED if u refuse to participate. there are still many other types of surveys in e markets..i cant possibly name all of them.. i see this email as a threat to us, interviewers working in research firms.bcoz if this kind of email spreads, ppl are jus gonna lock themselves in boxes n refuse to reveal anything bout themselves even if its purely for research purposes. i've met ppl who totally block their minds/brains/eyes/ears from e outside world.. i think thats a really sad story.. hopefully wat i had written will broaden ur mindsets..consider ur opportunity costs the next time u say 'NO' before understanding wat the situ is all about. Open ur minds n u'l stand to gain. Loves.. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: Sat, Feb 21 2004, 10:57:46 So, you have worked for such company, and quit because you are against their business ethics. Shouldn't you do something about it? Those "fakos" telemarketers you mentioned are the ones harming your livelihood as a "professional" interviewer, not pple who have got a bad impression of surveys, interviews becos of them. Write a police report, inform the press, go down Orchard Road and tell off these "fakos" when you see them. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: Tue, Feb 24 2004, 0:48:03 in fact,i think such companies should be banned!tis kinda unethical hard-selling con companies!perhaps we should get an online petition rolling! one thing is tat i get very upset when i read bout bad reports in e net..its very unfair to see us, true blue interviewers, in e same light as those fakos.. i would understand tat there r many ppl esp in city hall conducting fake surveys..however, its actually very easy to tell apart real n fake surveys tat r conducted only to get ur name n number so tat they can get telemarketeers to call u up for another round of hardcore selling.if u dun feel comfortable after answering e survey,u can always give a fake number.. still,if e survey is for real, it is stil compulsory for e interviewer to request for ur contact number bcoz we are paid by every survey done n not by e basic..n bcoz of tis, validators from e research company wil call e respondents at random to check n make sure tat e survey is conducted in e proper manner n not sth we fill up ourselves. at e end of e day,its how much u trust e 'interviewer' tat matters.if u feel suspicious of e purpose,u can always give a fake number,or not give any number at all..anyway,u got nth to lose by answering a few questions..u may even stand to gain! i hope my bringing up of e topic will shed light on readers on who to trust n who not to..
