His life savings lost to lottery scam in just one week

LAWRENCE, 65, who wants to be known only by his first name, is a victim of a Spanish lottery scam similar to the one reported in Streats last week.

A former civil servant, Lawrence recounted how he lost $16,000 – his life savings – to the cheats two years ago.

In July 2002, he received a letter from “Elizabeth Maria Lopez”, who identified herself as the vice-president of the El Gordo Lottery Association in Spain, saying that he had won US$319,000 (S$547,277).

At that time, Lawrence said that he was too distracted by family problems to verify the letter’s claim and did not suspect anything.

He replied and was asked to send more than $3,000 to a Spanish bank to pay for a bank transfer of the prize money to his bank account. Soon he was told that more money was needed for taxes and other bank transactions.

“They kept pestering me, asking for more,” said Lawrence, who realised that he had been taken in when the demands reached $18,000. By then, it was too late. In a week he had sent more than $16,000, his life savings of 40 years.

Lawrence said that he did not make a police report as he felt it would be futile.

“What’s gone is gone, nothing can be done. What are the police going to do? The police are going to think I was a fool.”
