The reality is that the Intifada had been planned for months and was held until there was a 'good enough' reason to launch it. Sharon's visit was a lucky stroke because he is a high profile personality and involving him in the reason for attacking Israel would give the Palestinians a better chance to suggest that it justified their actions.

It had to be hoped that the Children's Jihad against the Israeli's would garner world support, but they turned a blind eye. Only the US tried to seek a solution. How many young lives were lost in this heartless crusade before Arafat decided to change tactics?
The use of homicide bombers was tried next, but the Israelis had lived in expectation of imminent attack from their Arab neighbors for 50 years and their resolve remains unswayed.

Israel is there for keeps. The sooner that that fact is accepted, the sooner peace will come to the region. The Palestinians in Israel will be free to spend their resources and energies in building their own industries and the wealth that they bring instead of wasting them on an endless circle of violence as they are transitioned to independence.
