Hello,

I graduated from Tilden in June, 1962. I have fond memories of both Murray Adler and Bernie Mars.

I spent many Saturday afternoons cutting orange slices & pacing the sidelines at Tilden Football games. I would love to hear stories about my dad Bernie Mars. I have great memories from the 60's & 70's.

Hi Steve,
I played for your dad and Murray Adler from 59-62. They were both important people to me in those years. To an insecure teenager being part of a team and being made to feel important was something I'll always remember.

I remember your dad as the "good cop" and Ace Adler as the "bad cop" in the sterotypical scenario. Coach Adler was always the very emotional, unpredictable one and your dad was always the voice of reason. I remember how hard your dad worked; and how many cigarettes he smoked; and the smell of tincture of benzoin ("tuff-skin")when he taped our ankles on Saturday mornings; and that beat-up car he drove; and your mother telling us that she knew all our names because your dad spoke about us when he was at home; and your father's huge hands; and your dad talking about his footbal experiences at Erasmus Hall H.S; and your dad forcefully telling one of my teamates never to make racial stereotypes after he made a vulgar comment about the Boys High football team; and, yes, the smell of the oranges during halftime.

I had a closer relationship to Murray Adler in those days,
but I always had respect and great admiration for your dad.

Sincerely,

Richard Garcia

it's starting to come back, coach mars running 16mm prints of his brooklyn college team staring Allie Sherman at qb and coach Mars at end, my god, it's almost 50 years and I still think of the Man as "Coach Mars", thats the kind of impression the man had on my young life.
My sure He would be very proud of his son becoming a heavy with Madison Square Garden Productions.
Later.....

My mothers maiden name was Maddie Mass and somewhere along the line I think your family changed your to Mars. If this sounds familiar please e-mail me.

I think richie garcia hit it on the head of good cop bad cop, I also remember Murray be wild and misterious trying to read his moods of the cigar and the marine cap with his shorts on ment he was going to break out the whip and makes us hit. it was always exciting, being I'd rather hit than run. where as Bernie was usually joyvial and just enjoyed being there.. I would like to get a football reunion together for the mars/adler years.. several years ago in 1992 I went to one for Murray from his ball players from Lafayette H.S. where I was an assistant coach for Murray there was about 450 players there it was great. PLease leave me or Cal Levy a messege here so we can get the ball rollong I'm in contact with about 40 guys throught the years.

Midwood players from the late 50's and 60's get together every year for a game and a post game get together at the Mariner Bar near Marine Park.

We often talk of opponents and how it would be great to see some of the guys from other teams. Ronnie Bly's name comes up a lot. This year we are going to a 10/21 game at Midwood. You are welcome.

I played for Bernie Mars during th '67'68'69 years. We went 8 and 2 losing to Boy's High and Bklyn Tech in 60. I played with some great guys; Victor Bonolio, Alvin Nubia and Greg Murphy to name a few. WHen I played, Murray Adler had already moved to Lafayette as their head coach. Most fun game was Madison on their artificial turf (then a rarity) under the lights.
