Subject: Subtext and Sturgeon Author: Jane [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 15:23:24 04/28/01 Sat A couple of weeks back I posted some speculation as to what extent subtext exists in mainstream TV due to the input of gay writers. Today I’ve been surfing through reviews of TOS (I’ve had time on my hands waiting for paint to dry). I knew that some of the scripts for TOS were written by Theodore Sturgeon. Why was I not surprised to learn that ‘Amok Time’ was one of them? Could Pon Farr be the invention of anyone other than a gay man? :g: And there’s little wonder that Spock is far more concerned at losing Kirk than his intended wife. On the subject of Sturgeon, I have long felt that his short story ‘The World Well Lost’ would be the ideal starting point for a Star Trek episode. I have this nasty feeling that one day Star Trek is going to *tackle the issue* and produce something unbearably awful. ‘The World Well Lost’ comes barrelling in from such an acute, and original angle (even nearly 50 years after it was written) that it could miss all the pitfalls. I would love to have seen the central premise of the story presented as a challenge for Picard’s diplomacy to stumble over. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ]
