The theme I chose was sex and sexuality. Although most of my colleagues chose the same theme, and I would like to write about something different, I found interesting questions and pieces of advice about teenagers and abortion. We all know that the number of pregnant adolescents is huge in Brazil and that abortion is considered as a crime, except for few situations. Therefore, adolescents and abortion is quite a very recurrent issue in our society.

In one of the situations, a nineteen-year-old Malaysian reported she was having unprotected sex with her boyfriend and, so far, her period hadn’t come. So, she believed she was pregnant, and, since she could not tell her parents about it, and in Malaysia abortion is regarded as a crime, she was asking for advice on something she could eat so the baby would abort naturally. The first thing people advised her was to look for a doctor to see whether she was really pregnant or not. One of the counselors write she should not abort the baby, if she was really pregnant, because it would hurt her physically, psychologically, mentally and emotionally. Another person wrote that babies are gifts from God, and that if her mother had aborted her, she would not be in the world right now. This person also mentioned that she should use condoms and protect herself. One interesting way out was suggested which by someone who wrote she could give her baby to adoption, and that her parents would have to accept the fact she was pregnant.

Another problem was posted by a sixteen-year-old girl who was worried about her period. She had been having unprotected sex with her boyfriend for one month and a half, and her period had not come yet. She thought she could be pregnant, but she could not take the morning after pill anymore, because it was too late. She asked if there was another way to terminate pregnancy than abortion. The answers were very similar to the ones in the previous situation. People mainly wrote that she should not consider having an abortion, because it would be bad for her. Besides, people mention that there wasn’t another way to terminate the baby in that case than abortion. One of the advisers wrote she was too young to have sex and she should consider not having sex anymore.

The third situation was even more extreme. The girl, who was fifteen years old had already had the pregnancy test and she had broken up with her boyfriend. She didn’t know whether she should tell her ex-boyfriend about the baby or have an abortion. People advised her that although not being her boyfriend anymore, he should know about the baby, because it was also part of him. One of the advisers wrote that telling the baby’s father was a way to find his support, what means that she would never know how her ex-boyfriend would react to her pregnancy if she didn’t tell him about it.

In conclusion, I realized that teenagers are really worried about pregnancy, but they do not have any instructions to face it properly, which mainly causes desperation and deep doubts. We can see that mainly through the problems of the two first girls, who were not even sure about their pregnancy but were already concerned about abortion.
