"Chaos in Brazilian city amid two-day blackout"-oct/31/2003
The news was about the blackout that happened in the end of october at Florianópolis. They said in very clear words, that the city of 300.000 people was completely out of communication and isolated from the rest of the country, without telephones.Neither mobile phones were functioning.Part of the system was affected by the power faillure and another part was overloaded by calls.
It was given some importance to the fact that hotels in Florianopolis were full with tourists and participants at two major business congresses, including the Futurecom telecommunications congress and fair, and mobile phones did not work. The blackout started , when a gas bottle used for power line maintenance on the bridge exploded, and the emergency services were about to normalize the situation. At the end,the news say that Aneel may fine the Centrais Elétricas de Santa Catarina, over the incident.
In my opinion, this reportage was an attempt to put a "cortina"of smoke over the blackout that happened in the United States and Canada.
At theirs blakout, more than 60 million customers were affected at the height of the blackout and only three deaths were tied to the outages .According to preliminary estimates, the losses will be around a bilion dollars.

Just imagine if someone died at Florianópolis due the blackout. The Brazilan's problem was absolutely nothing,if compared to the "american's blackout".

Robson.
