Reading #2

I chose two texts. The first one is about Thomas Edison. It is a short biography showing how he developed his skills in science. The text starts mentioning his greatest invention; the electric light, and then some parts of his life since he was a kid and his first experiments. It presents some interesting facts about Thomas Edison’s life, his first patent in 1868, and that “Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the order…”. By the way he considered his deafness as a blessing, “…it kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work…”. Thomas Edison was born in Ohio, on February 11, 1847 and died at the age of 84 on October 18, 1931 in New Jersey.

The exercises were interesting and I had a mistake in the vocabulary section.

The second text is called “Caption Television”. It shows the process of creation of this system. Malcom Norwood who worked for the government has created the captions. In the beginning he found some kind of resistance, but finally in 1971 he signed a contract with WGBH-TV, a public television station in Boston. So the first program was made. Today we use a decoder to receive the signals and that is what is called “closed captions”.

Also in the exercises related to this text I had a mistake, thus my score was 96% (6/7).

The site provides a bunch of texts related to deafness, some famous deaf people and also some topics related to this subject. It is interesting because it shows that sometimes people who are considered as “limited” are capable of extraordinary things. It is also nice to see the advances in this area.
