Subject: Reading II

READING ACTIVITY:

1) The text I chose was “Angels of Mercy”.
2) The story is about three deaf nurses who worked at Mercy Hospital of Kansas City, Missouri, at the beginning of the 20th century. May Paxton, Marian Finch and Miss Lillie "Bessie" Speaker were hired by Dr. Katherine Richardson, one of the founders of the hospital. The three nurses were called “the silent angels of Mercy Hospital” because of their special physical condition. May, who was the first deaf nurse hired by Dr. Richardson loved children and had a special way to take care of the hospital patients and she always followed Dr. Richards orders. However, one day, Dr. Richardson told the nurses not to hold the babies while they were crying, because the hospital had too many sick children to take care of, and May disobeyed the doctor’s order because she did not like to see babies crying. So when Dr. Richardson, was not around, May held the babies who were crying, and that attitude made a huge difference in the nursery. When Dr. Richardson discovered that she had been disobeyed, she did not punish the nurse, because she acknowledged the importance of that attitude to the nursery. Although the nurses’ work being a success, none of them continued in the profession, and Dr. Richardson always talked good things about them.
3) My performance when doing the exercises was great. I answered the questions about the text and vocabulary properly.
4) In my opinion, ESL/EFL students should visit the site in order to improve their reading skills, as well as their vocabulary. The text I read is really interesting, because it talks about real events. The exercises give students the opportunity to practice reading comprehension and vocabulary. The texts are a bit more complex than the texts seen in the previous week. Intermediate and upper-intermediate students can easily use them as extra practice.
