Week 2 – task 2

Reading task

I chose to read the text “Sophia Fowler Gallaudet” because as this woman’s surname is the same as the Gallaudet University, I got curious to know who she was. Mrs. Gallaudet was a deaf lady (she was born deaf in 1798) who married Mr. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, the principal of a school for deaf in Connecticut, USA. She was a lovely lady who, despite her “disability”, learned how to live and do things by herself – she had and raised eight children. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Gallaudet helped her youngest son to establish a college for death and worked there for some years.

After reading the text, I did the two kinds of exercises related to it: the content questions and the vocabulary tests. The exercises are not difficult but English learners can do them in order to practice and learn vocabulary items. Furthermore, there is another interesting point: if you click the button “explain” after answering the content questions, you can check your answers and can see what kind of question it is (comprehension, detail, inference, or sequence question) and get some tips to help you answering it. Besides the points I mentioned before, there are other two good reasons for a student to visit this site which are the variety of texts he/she can choose to read and the cloze reading practices – another section for improving vocabulary.

Writing task

I decided to write a Diamond-shaped poem (it was supposed to have a shape like a diamond but I couldn't do it here! - it worked in my word for windows):

From hot to cold
by Ana Cláudia

Hot
Sun, fire
Sweating, boiling, melting
Ice-cream, swimming pool, fireplace, hot chocolate
Shivering, freezing, chilling
Snow, ice
Cold
