READING 2

I chose the text “Thomas Edison”.
The text tells about the life of this genius, the man that invented not only the electric light, but also the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and many other things. He was born in 1847, and most of his life he learned things by himself (he only attended school for two months). He was very curious, and used to experiment with electrical and mechanical things since his young age. Even when he got a work at a train, taking care of the baggage, he continued to make his experiments. When he accidentally set fire to the floor of the baggage car, he was fired. Thomas Edison worked also as a telegraph operator, and in 1870 he sold an invention, a machine that that automatically prints stock prices on a tape, called stock-ticker, for $40.000. He then opened his first shop. Another interesting thing about Edison is that he was totally deaf in one ear, and hard of hearing in the other, but since he was so focused on his work, he didn´t care so much, cause his deafness meant less conversations. He died at the age of 84, in 1931, and left many inventions that improved the quality of life all over the world.
My performance with the exercises was very good. I just made a mistake about the word “intensely” in the vocabulary exercises. I got 100% in the content questions.
The site is very interesting, the texts are short, but have a lot of information. I knew the name Thomas Edison, but I didn´t know about his life, or the other things that he invented, besides the light bulb. I really liked the texts, and how it improved my knowledge about different persons. The vocabulary is very accessible, and the exercises cover the text really well.
