Where to begin...
Okay, first happy ending which really got me was Lorne's. I was just grinning like a cheshire cat when I saw how things turned out for him. He deserves every scrap of happiness he gets after what he's been through this season.
Wonderful to see Darla again. She has a way of turning up at the perfect moment, and her attachment to Connor is lovely to see considering what she used to be like.
Lindsey seems to be heading in the general direction of becoming a fully decent person, so go him. It was somehow fitting that he was the one to get Lilah to fully spill the beans. And the fact that Angel really was prepared to trust him to the extent of risking death was not an insignificant moment.
The final battles were clever. On the outside you had all hell breaking loose with unsired slayer and child vamps rising up in hordes to wreak havoc. If it had been in hollywood I think the battle would have been on a pretty grand scale, complete with copious CGI and tricky choreography.
And yet the real battle was a small one, with no witnesses, between just two unarmed soulled vampires. That was where the real high stakes were up for grabs.
I felt rather sorry for Angel at the start of the fight. The fact that even at that last hour he still tried to find some remnent of his friend in the creature facing him when everyone else could have told him that his Wes was long dead was a touching moment.
And no surprise that he tried to to pass on the chance for life. That is the sign of a champion, to be willing to wholeheartedly give up even your own chance of redemption if it means you can save someone else.
It was a, very welcome, surprise that the PTB actually gave him both rather than just saying: No, you passed, you get life, the other gets dusted.
I guess the benefit of having lived such harsh lives is that Wes and Lilah really do understand the difference a soul makes to a creature. That is something Angel has always had problems understanding, leading to his continual guilt and angst. He blames himself for the crimes of Angelus even though he sees the soulless vampire as a totally different entity. While Wes and Lilah will probably have some pretty bitter memories and some pangs, I don't see themselves falling into this same pattern.
Either way, it's wonderful beyond words that they finally got a happy ending of their own. Without having be evil or trying to end the world on a daily basis. Talk about trial by fire, they can bicker all they want to, at least they both know that the other really would do anything for them if they had to.
And heaven knows what their child will turn out like! Both its parents have been evil, both can scare the bejeusu out of the general populace if they want to, both have incredibly sharp minds, both have far too much knowledge on all that's dark and wrong with the world... It'll either turn out to be one spoilt sugary sweet kid who thinks its parents are saints, or it'll be one scarily smart and sarcastic creature who knows its parents have shadowy pasts and loves it. Either way, wouldn't mind popping by that household again in the future :)
Hmm. Angel. Darla. Connor. Is Aunt Dru floating around there somewhere too? LOL. That's another household I wouldn't mind seeing again. In fact I can see the two children meeting up in the future to complain about the trials having ex-evil parents.
A great ending to a brilliant season. Somehow you managed to coax a happy ending for pretty much everyone without making it seem forced or too sugary. Not a mean feat.
Bravo! Encore!
