Welcome to the ARV circle, TOG. Grand episode with which to make an entrance :)
Only one slight quibble.
Wes is English. And a slightly upper-class one at that. On the whole, he's probably more likely to say 'stupid' rather than dumb. Other than that, he seemed to be in splendid form tonight. His little scene with Lilah was sweet in a bizarre way. It is nice to see them peacefully together, even if it is because they're now both soulless and evil.
I can sympathise with Spike. History has shown that a good-guy-gone-bad is more likely to be treated with sympathy and general mercy than a bad-guy-gone-good-slipping-up-one-last-time. His talk with Angel was snarky, bitter, but also very well thought out. And he did have a good point. If Wes had been any other vamp causing this much threat, AI would have been out and hunting him down by last week.
He's also right about the contradiction in the way Angel treats Angelus and Wes. Angelus is seen as a totally different creature who should be staked. (In which case, Angel, why do *you* feel the need to be redeemed if past crimes were nothing to do with you?) But Wes is treated as the same person he always was, just with an extra dark streak in him.
It's also odd to realise just how much Spike has changed over the past season or so. Those old wise-cracks are vintage Spikisms, but brought back so suddenly they seem so out of place. I hope he manages to figure things out for himself soon.
So. Willow's eyes went black when she did magic. Hmm. Not a good sign considering she's just meant to be using just the nice magic. Still, I think she can be forgiven for this one slip considering that she and Tibby were about to be disembowelled.
Love Lilah. Her little comebacks at Gunn and Lindsey sounded so like her. Her quiet pride in Wes is also a nice change from their angst-ridden-past. The 'stand in his shadow' comment was almost sweet :) However, I don't know how the hell she managed to escape but I don't think it bodes well for Gunn and Lindsey. Lilah is a proud person and is unlikely to forgive them anytime soon. Also, she has one powerful partner who probably won't appreciate the lady he's had to literally die for being roughed over by some mere humans. Payback's a bitch isn't it?
And then we finally got that little punchup between Angel and Wes. I am feeling very sorry for Angel right now. When he pulled Wes back from the edge, that was a nasty moment. If it had been Gunn, Fred, Spike, or Connor, the vampire would have fallen and from their point of view that would have been a good thing. But Angel pulled him back. It says a lot about the strength of their friendship before all this happened, and I wonder if Wes himself isn't a little surprised by it. Wes does seem rather hung up on the idea of power what with his tirade against Angel about putting down those who seem stronger than him. Personally I think it's more Wes' own issues speaking here than Angel's. Wes has always suffered from lack of self-confidence and it sounded like his own point of view regarding himself rather than what Angel genuinely believes.
And no surprise that Wes was just playing with his old friend. Painted metal stakes. That's cheeky.
Poor Fred. But then again she was the one to cause Wes the most grief over the past few seasons, I always wondered if she'd be the first to go. At least her death might prod the remaining memebers of AI into taking some serious action, or more precisely, hopefully it'll make Angel take some serious action. Considering Wes used exactly the same technique as Angelus did to get him out the way, I wouldn't wonder if he's kicking himself for falling into the same trap as Buffy did in 'Becoming.'
Finally. Generally note, and one that got drilled into us during our communication skills lecture today.
It's = it is.
Its = of it.
Otherwise, a good solid ep. AI and Wes are definitely headed for some kind of confrontation.
And how the hell is Faith going to deal with losing her third Watcher?
Can't wait! :)
