Commiserations, Ian: it's awful when a much-loved part of one's childhood landscape suddenly disappears. I don't really understand, though; surely the local residents must have been aware of planning proposals in the area? Surely they should have been notified so that they could make appropriate representations? Developments such as these aren't supposed to come as a complete shock.

As Fuzzy says, it might be worth checking with the local Tree Officer - although it's unlikely that an ancient oak could have been felled without coming to anyone's attention. However, one other possibility is that there was something wrong with the oak which meant that it had to be cut down anyway, in which case the Tree Officer should be able to tell you.

One thing you could do that might make you feel a bit better, perhaps, is to find somewhere suitable where you could plant some acorns (always supposing that you can find some acorns, and a likely place). Obviously, the trees wouldn't necessarily take root and grow, and would anyway take centuries to come to maturity: but at least the process would have been started. The oak tree of your childhood memories is gone, but some day others might come to take its place.
