In the case of Horizon, thats absolutely true, it would depend on context. Consider words in English like "account", "atmosphere", or "figure". The west represented the land of the dead and was, really, the only "horizon" that mattered. Attaching the name "horizon" is simply an effort to make things easier for us non-Egyptian speakers.

So, yes, a lot can be lost in translation.

Without context I guess it would be possible to argue that the "horizon dwellers" were spirits of the dead, but that term is usually used within a context that leaves no doubt about their identity.
