Okay, legend was probably not the right word. What I need is a word meaning something like, "renowned but exagerated", or "infamous, yet overhyped".

What I meant was, from reading (unfortunately, I can't supply cites, since I don't remember where I read it; one reason why I seldom speak up in these forums) there is strong reason to doubt that Caesar (or his troups) burned the library deliberately (and the idea that he used the scrolls to fire his baths out of revenge -against who?- is a new one on me), and that it was totally destroyed (or even significantly damaged). The Wikipedia article has a fair summation of what I remember reading elsewhere http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria_library (scroll down a bit to the section titled "Destruction of the Library"). It mentions the Muslims as having used the books to heat bathwater; maybe that's what you were thinking of.
