I was in the mechanical room a few times... and there's a post about it here dealing with the steam tunnels beneath the dorm. What I remember about the room was it had all the electrical and heating controls for the dorm... and some emergency switches for neighboring dorms. There was also a door to what you see outside RM 123. From the courtyard it was a cement lined pit covered with a grill. It might have been just an emergency entrance to the mechanical room... but it probably was there for ventilation.
