Subject: Loved That Pierpont Elevator!

At the end of the spring 76 semester I was one of the last to leave the dorm. With most gone I had the run of the dorm.

I always wanted to see what was above the elevator but the hatch was sealed. One night I decided to test a theory... that I could stop the elevator between floors, force open the door, climb to the lobby, and finally check it out. I soon learned I needed a board to keep the door from closing... and once up top there were elevator controls. But to use them meant having to reach into the elevator to disengage the emergency stop... climbing atop the elevator and letting the doors close. As a prankster the uses of this discovery were self-evident.

It wasn't until the next semester that I talked my roommate Karl into joining me atop the elevator. It was late September and there was some party going on. We'd let people get on board on the ground floor then take control using the inspection controls. We'd take them up and down and up then down... never letting them get to the floor they wanted.

It must have been 2am when the elevator got a call to go to the basement. We picked up someone and ran them though the mill. But after a few trips the person put the emergency stop on while on the 4th floor. We tried to override the controls but could not. That meant Karl and I were now in this pillbox that protruded above the roof... and with the hatch sealed, there was no way out. We saw the person leave.

We were pretty cool and collected for a while... but soon started to talk loud enough for someone below to hear. That's when we saw that there was a second person in the elevator all along.... as they left. Shit! No only were we trapped... but we expected that the cops would be called. All the time the cold wind was blowing into the vents and we were freezing. Should we yell for help?

Mercifully some 20 minutes later some unsuspecting soul got in, unlocked the emergency stop and when they were on the second floor... we stopped the elevator and escaped to the third.

Whew!
