Subject: Going Student Run.... when did this start?

Back in 75-77 I recall an effort among some Pierponters to go "student run". Bob's old Pierpont newsletters show the effort goes back at least to 1973 and probably before.

So what's the history here?

On a side note… when in the mid-spring 77 semester our HoR, Deanna, was leaving to take up a position at Prince House she recommend my roommate Karl and myself to become co-HoR. We were certainly in favor of it, and even considered ourselves a Trojan Horse approach to this finally happening. But we worried that we could not walk the required tightrope. On the one hand we had to convince the SW administration we were not like the most radical factions of Pierpont … and on the other hand during a dorm review we had to convince those most radical elements that we secretly on their side… even if we didn’t have much respect for the anarchistic party crowd. That probably goes back to a Fall 76 dorm meeting. Someone was complaining about the noise from the 4th (party) floor. Some of the responses from the 4th floor crowd were along these lines:

"You should be grateful that we're just being inconsiderate. We could be violent!"

or

"Your loosing a night's sleep is a small price to pay for our freedom."

Ya right!

The best we could hope for was to lay the foundation for going student-run in sometime down the road. Not that we had the chance. Did we withdraw our names? Or did SW Admin just put someone else in as HoR? As I recall her name was Jane. Perhaps it was a good thing that Karl and I were not made co-HoR. Someone might have begun to ask why I was still living in the dorm when I was no longer a student ;-)
