hey Nikki,

i’ve only seen the movie on vcd in the original English version with Chinese subtitles, you know none of them is my frst language and i don’t understand each single word perfectly… so, i really can’t succeed claiming my point of view in any discussion. i haven’t read the book as you did, so i can only base on the movie by now, but nevertheless i wanna try to explain why i think the character of Paulie’s mother might have similarities to Astrid’s mother.

It’s true that Ingrid in the movie (btw i did order the English book and DVD already) always seems to want to control her daughter Astrid.

But in the end of the movie we found out that Ingrid did gave her daughter away to Anni once and Astrid was there for a long time. We don’t get to know any details about Paulie’s mother in the movie “Lost and Delirious” but in the novel “The Wives Of Bath” by Susan Swann we do. Paulie’s mother is mental sick there or at least unable to take care of her daughter. (chapter 15, page 80: “Paulie has a real mother,” the Virgin said. “She just isn’t able to cope with Paulie. She’s in a mental institution.”)

So i guess Paulie’s and Astrid’s mother were at a certain time at least not able to deal with their daughters. And i see similarities between Paulie and Ingrid. Both at their best can be very great persons, but not always they were at their bests. Both can be very stubborn in reaching to get what they want. Both don’t really take the advice of others. And truth is, that we have always some habits from our parents, if we want it or not…

well, i know i’m walking on a very thin line here, but this is a forum to discuss thoughts and this is one of me. ;) You all feel free to disagree with me.

Yep, i agree we cannot compare Paulie and Astrid. Still i have to admit i like Astrid’s character in the movie i saw a lot. She’s not perfect, like none of us is, but loveable and i agree with a lot of things she says or does.

i think the physical aspect is almost nothing, talking about Paulie/Tori in combination with Claire/Ron. Maybe Tori and Paulie have the chances for a deeper love cos of the physical aspect, but that’s not my point here. i can agree to what you say on their relationship, but i do not agree with their suicide. Life offers you always new chances as long as you’re in the physical condition at least. See how many girls and even feel for Paulie in this world. There SURE would have been another chance for love, maybe one where she could have received love as she gives. And Astrid was so happy with Claire. I imagine Astrid saying almost exactly what Mouse said:

“Claire…she didn’t have that love so the darkness took over her, and she had to fly away….I still dream of her, every night. And I think I always will.…..
And you know, I can always remember you now….Anytime I think of you, I look up, and I see your face. Like my mother’s face, like a flame across the sky….”

So please don’t tell me Astrid did not do anything while Clair was dying… We can’t get that out of the movie and it would be too sad to read it like this in the book…

Stef
