You have to also take into account that Paulie was madly in love with the only person who had ever loved her back. Her own mother didn't want her and the only love she had ever felt was the intense and lifechanging love that tori had given her. To have something like that ripped away from you when you're in Paulie's situation is absolutely terrifying.
