Hey, Marilyn -- (I think I know you!)

If I were guessing, I'd say this tradition, of course, came from the British. Ladies-in-waiting and all that.

At one time, probably 30 years ago, "Lady Something" was a popular name to use here in the South. I've known:

Lady Ann
Lady Margaret
Lady Lu
Lady Jane

... and just "Lady." I've also known a "Lassie." (And we're all familiar, I hope, with "Lady Luck.")

This probably doesn't help. :(

Try Googling "lady in waiting" and see if you get any info on calling females "Lady Whatever."
