I went to Camp Mikan at the same time you did! I was also a counselor after being a camper and a JIT. Doris Bedell was director and Luke Bragg, one of my most favorite people, was the drama director. I vaguely remember your mom, Sophie. I think the Infirmary was in Recro and so many of us got "sick" so we could see the boys. My last year at Mikan was 1959 or 60, I think. I stayed in NY, went to graduate school in Oregon and then Cincinnati and have lived a quite conventional life. I guess the most unconventional thing I have done is that I went back to school full-time in 1974; my two children were 3 and 5 and got an MBA and a PhD. It is wonderful to know that there are folks out there who also were Mikanites.

>I believe I was there in 1950. It was so long ago. The only thing I remember was that it had a departure place called The Jewish Settlement House located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on I believe Houston Street. It might have been my first sleep-away camp at that time. I'm 75 yrs. old now and think about my childhood from time to time.

I am dating myself, I went to camp recro located in harriman state park as a camper from 1947 to 1952, and was a councilor in 1953.
I use to go there with a group of my Albanian friends and cousins from the lower east side.
We have such wonderful memories of that place. It was a
beautiful setting and very rustic. We use to go there for three weeks every summer. What fun for a group of kids from the lower east side.
Anyone out there from that time frame, please reply.

There was a day camp in Staten Island that was run by Recreation Rooms and Settlement Houses. That is the same organization that "ran" Mikan and Recro. I lived in the Lillian Wald Housing Project and went to Staten Island from the day camp during the summer when I wasn't at Camp Mikan. My experiences in both places were wonderful. I hope yours were too.
