Eric, the US was attacked on September 11th, 2001, and there now is not only a war on poverty, and on drugs, but also on terrorism. It is very difficult and very expensive to wage three wars at the same time; every country, including the enemy country, is obliged to do their best in any and all wars to reach final victory or at least a favorable and honorable cease-fire. Any all means/weapons to that end are not only required, but even necessary if needed, however terrible, and even international treaties may have to be ignored if any one of the enemies has ignored any of the treaty obligations/provisions.
..... Christianity originally required all members to live a communal lifestyle in separate communities, with ALL members being quite peaceful and meek, so that within those communities there was no danger of wars, nor even of intentional other kinds of hurtings. But outsiders (the Romans) killed Jesus and interfered with the operations of that very early version of Christianity, so that later versions were needed designed not only to appease the Romans, but also to attract as many non-Jews as possible into a very different version of membership that very likely Jesus would have rejected.
