Subject: Kind of a shame

Old Armory demolished

I remember practicing football and basketball in the old armory. More recently it was useful when I coached my son’s indoor soccer team. I hope they use the space well. It would be a shame to bulldoze this historic building just for a parking lot, drug store, or another BBQ restaurant. Downtown will look strange without it.

I know it was falling apart, but I took it hard when they demolished the old Mason Hotel. Too bad the city didn't want to invest in its preservation, also –– a lot of history there.

While traveling back east to Ohio, where my wife is originally from, I noticed most of their historic old places are still standing; places that bring in lots of tourist bucks.

I almost cried Friday when I was out on my lunch hour. They were taking down the south wall. My grandfather worked for the WPA when the old Armory was built. My dad served in the Army National Guard and the US Army, so he spent a lot of time there. You know, it is going to be a parking lot! A parking lot for RCB Bank!

Did anybody ever go down into the basement? I didn’t but I couldn’t go into the armory and not get a ball to fall down those steps; it was always going to happen. Which of course made me wonder what was behind that door.

Creepy things can be found behind basment doors, Mike. Maybe it's best you never found out!

Yeah, a parking lot. How unworthy.

I guess what bugs me the most Bryan is that Claremore traded a historic building for a poorly located ugly metal building. Gosh did we really need another one of these? Its central location was great for a lot of kids and parents. Only worst was the benefit was for a business and not really the community. I wonder what that building would have looked like if someone (RCB for instance) had provided 100K to fix it up?

That said, I have not been in the new community center, have you?

I'm sure, with a little creativity, someone could have come up with a good use for the Old Armory, surely. But the city seems all too ready to tear down its heritage. It's frustrating.

Yes, I have been in the new facility and, admittedly, it is a fine complex. I occasionally take my daughter there to swim in their Olympic size pool. Still, no excuse to scrap an old landmark like the Armory.

No not that rec center. In the Progress article they mentioned a steel building was built in exchange for the land. It is located out by the soccer fields. I have driven by it, but have not had the occasion to go inside. I guess you haven’t either.

The thing that chaps me is that RCB was turned down by the city to buy the property, the city turned them down because they knew it was going to be a parking lot. So an investment company came in and bought it, then they turned around and sold it to RCB. Some one has finally admitted that it was set up with RCB and the investment comp. to buy it and turn around and sell it to RCB. So I guess if you will excuse my language, I'm pissed at the investment company and RCB for their dealings behind the city's back. And I will finsh up by saying, I'm glad I don't bank at RCB.

Nope. You're right. I haven't been in that one.

I'll be the first to admit I know some of the people (and have for as long as I can remember) that made that decision to do this and they have allways made me feel like family and I still love them, but it's just the way it was done. Being in real estate, if someone would have done what they did, they could lose their license and be fined. And I guess it's as much my fault as anyone's because what I found out is the historical socity tried to raise donations to buy it, but could not raise the money. I wouldn't want anyone to drop RCB, they are doing alot for the community.

Ok you RCB haters; no matter where you bank you will run in to some sort of problem (big or small). This is not a perfect world and I not backing RCB cause I work here I have had my own dealings with this place. By the way...If I was in upper management that parking lot would not have happened if that makes yall feel any better.

The fact remains that Claremore traded a useful, well located, historic, albeit not so attractive building, for a metal building on already city owned property and a parking lot. And sure RCB is looking after their best interests as do all successful businesses, but as we see here; their fortune is not always in the community’s best interests. It should be. This is especially true, since they schemed (thanks Kenny) to get their way after being legitimately turned down. I believe that RCB should have had higher standards. When they updated their building east from the Old Armory, they used bricks for their walls not metal. Again a 100K investment by them to modernize the Old Armory would be in-line with what they should have done. Let’s not forget that RCB has two sets of drive-in bank teller areas, if they needed more parking places they could have easily rid themselves of the one just north and east of the armory. They could have put in a modern multi-story parking garage in that space.

Oh well, hopefully the city council learned something, but I doubt it.

More discussion here

Michael

About the way our dear city is ran, I was told that the dept. heads have to be within a certain distance from city limits (they have to be real close) incase they have an emergency, I "think" that was implimated by some of top city officials. The thing is, some or several of these city officials don't live in the city limits or even in this county, I guess the old saying isn't true, what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander, either that or they are too important. I really shouldn't complain about anything since I live in the thriving community of Inola. On my suspicion's about the armory I can't believe that someone from the city didn't know what was going to happen, and maybe instead of putting up a building maybe they could have.............ah........put some money back for harder times or even maybe hire a few firemen back, but what do I know, I'm just a pin head. I couldn't believe it when I drove thru Claremore Saturday morning and saw the demolished Armory! I was shocked since I had not heard anything about it. I guess living in Pryor really is on the other side of the world. But it truly brought a tear to my eye. Alot of great memories in that building. It really is a shame for Claremore!
