Subject: Safety on the water

I just got back from my cousin John Dover's funeral. This past Saturday he and his son were out boating at Hudson Lake having a good time when, all of the sudden, my cousin lost his hat. Out of reflex action he immediately put the boat into a hard turn in order to retrieve it. He was then thrown overboard by the centrifugal force of the hard turn because he was standing up. Not being able to get to the wheel in time, my cousin's son watched helplessly and in horror as the boat then started going into a tight circle, running over my cousin and killing him when the propeller struck his neck and head.

All of this could have been avoided if my cousin had only been wearing the kill switch, or dead man's switch as it is also called, which is supposed to be clipped on to the person piloting the boat. He also wasn't wearing a life jacket, which is why it took three hours to find his body.

My cousin's son survived the ordeal, though badly shaken.

I posted all of this on the board not to get sympathy, but to raise awareness as to boat safety. I'm not a boater but no doubt some of you are. Please always wear a life jacket, and if you're piloting a boat wear the kill switch.

Bryan
