The story was that at the end of 1980 Bob Farrell and Ben Wallace-Crabbe were kicked out of the Clowns - I think because of some incompatibilities or perceived unreliabilities. When the Clowns resumed gigging again in early 1981 they were a 4 piece with Dan Wallace-Crabbe on bass. I recall a gig by that lineup at an upstairs place in King Stree Newtown.

A few weeks later the Clowns were due to play the Trade Union Club, but Dan never showed up. After keeping the punters waiting for ages the three remaining members of the band took the stage for an extended improvised jam. The story goes that Louise Elliott was in the audience that night and loved what she heard and asked to join the band. They found a new bass player in Biff Miller and the next great lineup of the Clowns took shape.
