Remembering this gift always brings a smile to my face -- it makes me think of Claire not knowing Jamie for very long at all when she thinks that thing to herself about "if I were a horse...". John and Stephan haven't known each other all that long here yet, but... "if I give you a horse..." ??? Who knows? It's true that a fine horse would not be an unusual gift between titled officers, as a purely fraternal and friendly gesture, but.... ... ... horses certainly carry quite a lot of, ahem, <I>potent</I> meaning in DG's inconography! I also loved knowing that this is the horse (Karolus, right?) that John is riding later, during the eve-of-battle scene in BOTB. -- LJG Discussion board

John did ride Karolus into that battle. I remember that John had a bit of a time controlling him because Karolus loved a parade and he kept dancing and tossing his head. When the grenades were thrown, John was wounded, and Karolus was doubtless hit with shrapnel too. Karolus jumped into a ditch. That was when the Frenchman pulled John off him and said he was his prisoner. I was so afraid for John, of course, but also for Karolus. I knew John would escape, but would we ever see Karolus again?
