- Oh my, Jane's right - what a wonderful intuitive leap! I think it's so interesting how DG takes what could be very cliched elements like images of stallions (eg. the whole "King of Ireland" joke that J&C share, Wylie's Friesian, etc.), or the whip (John and Percy), and manages to infuse them with emotional undercurrents for the specific characters, so the potential cliches become more than just sexy imagery or window dressing. And there are literally dozens of horse references, going all the way back to Jamie's original job in the beginning of Outlander. And the stables at Helwater are the setting for some very critical scenes in BOTB -- remember how John's feeling of shocked intimacy/trespassing when he sees Jamie's living quarters in the stables. Stables and barns, such functional places, become the sites of some of the most intimate scenes: Jocasta's barn in FC (!!); Jamie with Bree in the barn talking about her rape, etc. (NT) -- pamelalass, 07:27:53 02/14/08 Thu
