Subject: He feels his duty is to the men and women who have fallen rather than to the commanders who sent them into harm's way? Our friends had the same discussion with their son, who is now in the Navy, who objects to the decisions of his now Commander-in-Chief. He's not there because he supports the war, he's there because he wants to serve. Patriotism often gets confused with conformity. As we see in the The Books, disagreement as to where duty lies does not diminish honor.
