This quote is an interesting place to end; it suggests both John's compassion and leadership, as well as his isolation and loneliness -- the knowledge that he, like this boy, is forced to compromise a part of himself by taking lovers in secret, publicly denouncing and joking about buggery, and the don't ask/don't tell line he walks with Hal and other close family/friends. But it is entirely appropriate -- I think his alone-ness is one of the things that most draws me to this character, and even though he is focused on saving someone else's reputation here, it is his own fear and isolation that I sense in this passage. -- LJG Discussion board

I also was thinking on how much John identified with this boy and wished to smooth the road ahead of him as much as possible, having traveled it himself. What an awful life it must have been for a gay person in that time, having to constantly pretend to be something you are not. I personally couldn't stand the isolation and loneliness. I guess that is why I am so desperate for John to connect to someone worthy of him. I thank everyone who ever contributed to this board. I hope we can look back into the achieves when we feel the need to reconnect with the power and passions of the discussions we've had here. It was a nice run for John fans!
