I agree with you, kgp. This reminded me of Carruthers' observation about Hal & LJG and their drive to keep peace and order. Providing for the baby's welfare by delivering him to the French mission was LJG's way of restoring some measure of order after he'd been abandoned by his father and left motherless as well. I think he did all he could do without bringing too much attention to the baby and the circumstances of his birth. I agree with you on the reason behind choosing John Cinnamon's name, too.
