LJ said he would "stand as step-father" (Voy). I don't know if this mean formal adoption or not. Either way though, the minute the old Earl died wouldn't William become Earl - only having to wait until he comes of age to control the money, estate etc, but I think the title is his immediately. Therefore LJ wouldn't be adopting William, as such, he would be adopting Earl of Ellesmere. Let's say LJ married Geneva after William came of age (I know he married Olivia but for the sake of argument) - William would still be Earl, just as Hal remained Duke of Pardloe after Benedicta marries Percy's father. Does that make sense? At any rate you're right he is only step-cousins but still, LJ refers to Percy as his 'brother' when intoducing him and look how convoluted that is (his step-father's step-son...) -- LJG Discussion board
