I'm sure your memory of '60s Catholic school is much more accurate than my Masters of Divinity with emphasis on Biblical Studies.
The point was what was available to the average person of that time. The point was that highly unlikely, given the time, and limited distrubution, etc., that that particular word would have been in a Bible available to these characters. Kind of like them quoting the Declaration of Independance in this timeframe. They might talk to Tom Jefferson, but they wouldn't freely quote what they wouldn't have available. They wouldn't use a gun that wasn't available outside of a certain gunsmiths experimental workroom, or was still on the drawing board, or not in that country. Don't get hung up on the fact it was a Bible. It stood out to me because I have a degree in this, and have actually TAUGHT Matthew 5 to Seminary students, having studied it under Bailey, Olgalvie, and McDaniel. It would be the same as someone calling a plant by the wrong name, or something it wasn't named at the time depicted, would strike DG differently than the average person.

Does it matter -for fiction- the difference between words - Justice & Righteousness - not at all (theologically big, but that isn't this point). If the character wants to say justice, it it simply the character, whether the translation is A or B, the character interprets it B. The character was quoting a specific book, and the translations of THAT book, available to who the character is, didn't fit.
