I had to reread this scene and think about it for a bit - the first time I read it for the bald face of things, but on a rereading it really is an incredibly poignant scene. I don't think anyone except Jamie blames himself for what happened to Geneva, but he is convinced to his soul that he is to blame. Knowledge of that guilt must add another layer to John's feelings when he becomes William's father in Jamie's place, yet it is never spoken of again between them. When John said 'my dear' I wonder whether he was referring to Jamie or Geneva, or if he even knew himself. -- LJG Discussion board

I assumed it was Geneva but you're right. It could be either one, except I don't think John ever dares to even think of Jamie as "my dear". In DOA he asks Bri if he may call her "my dear", he doesn't assume that intimacy. He's known Geneva since she was 5 though. (NT) -- kgp, 11:21:56 05/21/10 Fri
- Well he's certainly never called Jamie that out loud, (I can only imagine the carnage *G*) but he does call Percy my dear, and I'm pretty sure I remember him calling various others that as well (Olivia, Minnie etc).
