John is very perceptive; he knew there was something wrong with the Dunsanys that was"beyond the tragedy of Geneva's death", add to that Jamie's odd behaviour, which John realizec was penance, and the way he said "I was her" groom (my italics). The next day at the funeral John knew full well about William's parentage.
