I had to listen a couple of times to really understand Benedicta's logic - of course she wants to protect her sons but I can't see how she would have thought Adams would have written a confession just because of a loaded, cocked pistol. - I went and reread that part, think I'm going to have to reread the whole book - again - there is just so much with the whole series. As far as I can tell Benedicta's motive in acting alone was the same as it had been ever since Gerard's death. As far as she knows she and the killer are the only ones who know Gerard didn't kill himself, and she knows if her boys find out the truth they won't rest until justice is served (their own kind, perhaps) and their father's name is cleared. Benedicta feels she would rather risk herself than the boys. I kind of wonder though about how clearly she thought this part out. We know how inaccurate pistols are unless you are close enough for the victim to grab you, Adam would know that and he would also know that Benedicata might threaten but she wouldn't likely shoot. IMO she would have been wiser to have told the boys everything at this point and had the 3 of them confront Adams together, with maybe a noble or 2 listening in the wings.
