I believe the "Everett" affair woke John up and made him more wary. Maybe herself will provide us with more glimpses of younger John in Scottish Prisoner. After all she seems to always leave us wanting more on purpose. In Haunted Soldier she does give us a little more (VERY little) information about his rape that only merited a casual mention earlier. How traumatic it must have been for 16 year old John, just then recovering from the loss of Hector, to be used like that, and then be forced to pretend nothing had happened. -- LJG Discussion board

Yes - and reading "Succubus" for the first time, I was struck by how much John identifies with the young German soldier, Franz, clearly seeing himself at that age and wanting so badly to show the boy how to protect himself, while at the same time he's powerless to prevent the others from harassing him.
