Subject: I feel so sorry for Hal. I think the "cold aloofness" was an act, to protect himself while he rebuilt the family's honorable name. John certainly loved his father and the loss affected him deeply, but he was a child. Poor Hal must have been absolutely devastated. I think his father must have been very close to him, he being the heir. Hal lost more than his father and his title. Being an adult he didn't have anyone to cushion the blow and protect him from society's reaction. It must have been all that he could do scrambling to protect his mother and John from feeling the brunt of it , the public scrutiny, since his father's "suicide" must have looked to everyone as an admission of guilt.
In reply to: teddie 's message, "Interesting that Hal doesn't hold the same feelings as John on this. I do not really think that Hal is callous about his father, but has taught himself to maintain a cold aloofness when dealing with his memories." on 17:37:46 11/04/07 Sun
