• Something else that really comes through in this book is how physically tough John is. I hadn't thought of him that way until BOTB, which shows him beating Hal at swordplay, fighting off thugs, in the thick of battle, sustaining near-fatal wounds and excruciating treatment, etc. He's not soft at all, in spite of his elegance.   • This really struck me also, Pamela. In the books she doesn't really show this much. Because of that, his physical descriptions (only 5'6" tall, eyes like a girl), other things such as being gay and coming from an affluent background...just make him seem like he wouldn't be tough.     • Yes, the only part that stands out for me in the main books, where we see his masculine toughness/authority/presence is the time in DOA when he climbs out of his sickbed to "defend" Claire from the irate German (Mueller). He's got a gun, and it even impresses Claire, but it's still mainly his diplomacy and command of the German language that give him mastery of the situation. (NT) -- pamelalass, 10:16:05 11/08/07 Thu

    • Yes, so true...Lord John is well, nearly macho in Brotherhood--this infrequently seen side of John makes him all the more sexy somehow. I'm not thinking so much about how he is portrayed as a champion of a woman's safety (eg, for both Claire, and Brianna); it's more about the battle scenes in Brotherhood. John is da man!       • Since we see him mostly from Claire's point of view in the main books, and mostly after her return, when he's older and a diplomat, we really don't see him as the professional soldier he was.       • Yes, great word to see in this context, teddie! It really is good to see this side of him: younger, more impulsive, really kind of a bad-@$$ in some ways, to survive and thrive as a professional soldier. A different world from the one in which we see him in the other books, as maddie noted. I knew he could be deliberate and ruthless in strategy and tactics, but this book shows his physical ruthlessness quite powerfully.
